Cytopathogenes (cp) BVDV kann leicht anhand seines destruktiven Effektes auf die Kulturzellen identifiziert werden.
Nicht-cytopathogenes BVDV (und dies macht bis zu 90% der im Labor untersuchten Fälle aus) wird durch fluoreszierende oder Enzym-markierte monoklonale oder polyklonale Antikörper sichtbar gemacht.
