Die keltische Wurzel des Ortsnamens „ Briens “ ( brig = erhaben, erhöht ) lässt vermuten, dass die Gegend beim Burgstollen ( Kirche ) seit mehr als zwei Jahrtausenden so genannt wird.
Es gehört bis ins 15. Jahrhundert einer Freiherrschaft an, die sich zwischen Unterwalden und dem expandierenden Kloster Interlaken während dreieinhalb Jahrhunderten zu behaupten vermag.
1528 wird Brienz Teil des Kantons Bern.

Until the 15th century it belonged to a barony that asserted its power against the canton of Unterwalden and the expanding Interlaken monastery for three and a half centuries.
Brienz became a part of canton Bern in 1528.
