Ein Dampferzeuger hat die Aufgabe, die in der Feuerung in Wärme umgewandelte chemische Energie des Brennstoffes in Enthalpie eines hochgespannten Dampfes umzuwandeln; seiner Funktion nach ist er demnach ein Wärmetauscher.
Am Beginn seiner Entwicklung war er einfach ein beheizter Behälter zur Erzeugung von Sattdampf, daher stammt auch der heute noch verwendete Name " Kessel ”.
