Zu Beginn des dritten Jahrtausends ist das Idealbild des Bischofs, auf den die Kirche weiterhin zählt, die eines Hirten, der ? in der Heiligkeit des Lebens Christus gleichgestaltet ? sich großherzig für die ihm anvertraute Kirche einsetzt und gleichzeitig die Sorge für alle Kirchen auf der ganzen Erde im Herzen trägt ( vgl. 2 Kor 11,28 ) . 4.
Der Bischof als guter Hirt findet Licht und Kraft für sein Amt im Wort Gottes, das er in der kirchlichen Gemeinschaft auslegt und mit mutiger Treue » opportune et importune « verkündet ( 2 Tim 4,2 ).
Als Lehrer des Glaubens fördert der Bischof alles, was es in seiner Herde an Gutem und Positivem gibt; er stützt und führt alle Schwachen im Glauben ( vgl. Röm 14,1 ) und tritt dafür ein, Verfälschungen aufzudecken und Verfehlungen zu bekämpfen.

The bishop, the good shepherd, finds light and force for his ministry in the Word of God, interpreted in the communion of the church, and announced with courageous fidelity in season and out of season ( II Tm 4,2 ).
Master of the faith, the bishop promotes whatever is good and positive in the flock entrusted to him, sustains and guides those weak in faith ( Rom 14,1 ), intervenes to unmask falsehoods and combat abuses.

Auch der Bischof muß von dem Mut der Demut erfüllt sein, die nicht fragt, was die herrschende Meinung über ihn sagt, sondern seinen Maßstab von der Wahrheit Gottes hernimmt und für sie einsteht – „ opportune – importune “.
Er muß vorangehen und den Weg zeigen können.

The bishop too must be filled with the courage of humility, not asking what prevailing opinion says about him, but following the criterion of God ’ s truth and taking his stand accordingly – “ opportune – importune ”.
He must be able to go ahead and mark out the path.
