Neuromyelitis optica zeichnet sich durch eine akute Optikusneuritis in Kombination mit einer akuten Myelitis transversa aus.
Es kommt zu demyelinisierenden und/oder nekrotisierenden Schädigungen in einem oder beiden Sehnerven sowie im Rückenmark.
