Forschungsergebnisse auf der Basis der bekannten Genomsequenzen verschiedener Organismen aus den letzten Jahren zeigten, dass neben den hinreichend bekannten proteinkodierenden Genen auch solche Gene in größerer Zahl existieren, die nicht für ein Protein kodieren, sondern für so genannte non-protein coding ( nc ) RNA-Moleküle.

Based on recent whole genome sequences in various model organisms and computational and experimental mining of non-protein coding RNA molecules ( ncRNAs ) it is clear that not only proteins but also RNAs are important entities of the cell, functioning both as housekeeping or regulatory RNAs.
