Ziel des Projektes ist es, das fundamentale Verständnis des Versagens von granularen Anordnungen und des Bruchs von spröden Festkörpern bei langsam veränderter Belastung zu vertiefen.
In der ersten Phase lag der Schwerpunkt auf dem Versagen granularer Packungen , in der zweiten liegt er auf Rissen in Festkörpern mit granularer Mikrostruktur .
Für experimentell realistische Laborproben mit Porengrößen von Nanometern bis Millimetern werden Simulationen von Systemen mit 10 bis 100 Millionen Körnern oder Teilchen (N ≈ 107 - 108) benötigt.
