The origins of Chełmno lie in the early medieval trading and craftsmen ’s settlement on the św. Wawrzyńca hill in Kałdus ( 4 km south of Chełmno today ) and in the village of Starogród ( 7 km ), place of Chełmno commandry, the first commandry of the Teutonic Order.
The town law, so called "Culmer Handfeste" (Chełmno Law), which was granted by the Teutonic Order in 1233, was used as a model for 225 further cities and towns (e. g. Warszawa, Gdańsk, Toruń) and 1364 villages until the 18th century.
