Maßgeblich am Aufbau des Instituts für Theoretische Physik beteiligt . Er entwickelte das Schalenmodell zur Erklärung der Stabilität von Atomkernen bei bestimmten Nukleonenzahlen und erhielt ( zusammen mit Maria Goeppert-Mayer ) für diese Arbeit 1963 den Nobelpreis für Physik .
