Vor allem um die Jahrhundertwende wurde in ( vorwiegend französischen ) Fachkreisen leidenschaftlich und durchaus kontrovers diskutiert, ob Flauberts Tod im epileptischen Anfall erfolgte oder ungünstiger Ausgang eines apoplektischen Insults war.
Liest man heute die Schilderungen, die den Todestag Flauberts ( 8.Mai 1880 ) detailliert beschreiben, so spricht vieles dafür, dass der große Dichter nicht im epileptischen Anfall, sondern an den Folgen einer Apoplexie starb.
