Er studierte Physik und Chemie und erwarb 1974 einen Doktortitel in Mineralogie und Petrographie mit dem Thema Die Genese der Pyrite der Karstgebiete der Nördlichen Kalkalpen an der Universität Wien.
Er arbeitete bereits seit 1971 am Naturhistorischen Museum in Wien und 2004 wurde er Direktor der Mineralogisch-Petrographischen Abteilung.
