Im Bereich Umweltstatistik & GeoComputation des Lehrstuhls für Geoinformatik werden innovative räumliche Datenanalysemethoden der Umweltstatistik und des Maschinellen Lernens entwickelt und angewandt, um akademische wie auch praktische geographische Probleme zu lösen.Diese Methoden werden ferner in (meist Open-Source-) Software implementiert.
Zu den Ergebnissen dieser Forschung zählt unter anderem die Implementierung von Erweiterungen für die Datenanalyse-Software R für die räumliche Kreuzvalidierung und die Anbindung von R and SAGA GIS, sowie die Entwicklung des ersten alpenweiten Permafrostmodells.

Statistical geocomputing at the Chair of GIScience involves the development and application of novel statistical and machine-learning methods that are required to solve academic as well as practical modeling problems in the spatial domain, as well as their implementation in (mostly open-source) software.
Recent research achievements include the implementation of R software extensions for spatial cross-validation and coupling R with SAGA GIS, and the development of the first alpine-wide permafrost distribution model.
