Prof. Dr. rer. pol. Detlef Wehling studierte Wirtschaftswissenschaften und Wirtschaftsgeschichte an der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.
Als Diplom-Volkswirt fokussierte er seine Forschungen auf die Neue Institutionenökonomik und auf die Gründung und das Wachstum von kleinen und mittelständischen Unternehmen .
In seiner Dissertation an der Universität und Gesamthochschule Kassel zum Institutionellen Wandel in Deutschland durch Umweltschutz in Analogie zur Sozialpolitik untersuchte er den politischen Handlungsspielraum der Institutionen mit ihren speziellen Auswirkungen auf die strategische Unternehmensführung.

In his doctoral dissertation (University of Kassel) on the Institutional Change in Germany Due to Environmental Protection in Analogy to the History of German Social Policy he examined the political scope of action of institutions and their special impact on strategic corporate management.
