Extracomunitari Info
- This term is used in Italy to mean immigrants from third-world countries (black Africa, the North-African Arab countries, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, China) or from the parts of Eastern Europe that have not yet joined the European Union (Albania, Romania). In everyday language the term extracomunitario, whilst it might seem to be politically correct and bureaucratic, is in fact discriminatory as it reflects prejudices that are hard to overcome. Its use as a label for poor immigrants who are exploited in underpaid jobs, often illegally and without the required work permit, and involved in illegal trafficking or criminal activities, expresses distrust and fear, and sometimes even outright contempt and hostility.
