Gerhard Ulm, geb. 1953, studierte Physik an der Universität Würzburg.
Nach dem Diplom wechselte er zur Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung ( GSI ) in Darmstadt, um dort das Gebiet Laserspektroskopie an durch Schwerionenfusion erzeugten Radionukliden aufzubauen.
Mit diesem Thema promovierte er 1984 an der Universität Mainz.
