The Wandervogel ( i.e., migratory birds ) is a new youth movement that rejects the imperial pose of the cities, eschews their slums, flees the stuffiness of the lecture halls and seeks ‘ genuine ’ life outside, in nature.
Its members sing round the camp fire to the simple accompaniment of a guitar, called the Klampfe or Zupfgeige (hence the title of the song-book Zupfgeigenhansl:
