The tracing service “Kirchlicher Suchdienst” was established by ecclesiastical welfare associations shortly after World War II for German refugees, displaced persons, repatriates and their families.
In the almost complete hometown cardex systems (Heimatortskartei, HOK), there are, today, more than 20 million persons recorded by name according to their erstwhile places of residence in the zones of expulsion in the period from 1939 to 1945.

Der Kirchliche Suchdienst wurde unmittelbar nach Kriegsende von Caritas und Diakonie für deutsche Flüchtlinge, Vertriebene, Spätaussiedler und deren Angehörige eingerichtet.
In den Heimatortskarteien (HOK) sind heute mehr als 20 Millionen Personen namentlich nach ihren ehemaligen Wohnorten registriert.
