The prize bears the name of Count Richard Nicolaus von Coudenhove-Kalergi ( 1894-1972 ), a philosopher, diplomat, publisher and founder of the Pan-European movement ( 1923 ) . Coudenhove-Kalergi was the pioneer of European integration and propagated the notion of a federation of European states in his works.
The Prize winners since 2000 have included the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Angela Merkel (2010) and Vaira Vike-Freiberga, the President of Latvia (2006).
