in casual conversation, an outsider might pick up on a slight drawl at the end of words like “phone” and “home” (“phuhone” and “huommme”) as they’re often pronounced outside DC;
and for anyone unfamiliar with neighboring Pennsylvania’s Quaker population, the occasional spotting of a nineteenth century buggy idling at a traffic light – as I had one afternoon en route to Smyrna with my former roommate – can seem like a jarring conflation of industry and tradition.

Und für alle, die sich mit der benachbarten Quaker-Bevölkerung Pennsylvanias nicht so gut auskennen – es ist auch nicht ungewöhnlich, so wie ich mit meinem Mitbewohner eines Nachmittags auf dem Weg nach Smyrna, ab und zu an einer Ampel einen Kinderwagen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert auszumachen.
