The common ancestor between the coelacanth and the fish, on the other hand, lived more than 20 million years ago.
The analysis of the coelacanth genome now shows - with greater statistical probability than previous studies - that among the fish, the lungfish and not the coelacanth is the closest living relatives of land vertebrates.
This was demonstrated for the first time in 1990 by a much smaller set of genetic data ( Meyer and Wilson, Journal of Molecular Evolution, 1990 ).
