The rising demand for palm oil is leading to a massive consumption of land and clearing of the rain forest, Bread for the World and the United Evangelical Mission announced in Berlin this week when presenting a study on this issue.
The largest palm oil producers are Malaysia and Indonesia , which grow about 86 percent of worldwide crops .
According to the study, there are at least 500 unresolved land conflicts in Indonesia between palm oil companies and inhabitants threatened by displacement.

Eine Alternative zur Produktion von Biokraftstoffen aus landwirtschaftlichen Erzeugnissen (Bioethanol aus Getreide oder Zuckerrüben, Biodiesel aus Raps- und Sojaöl) stellt Biodiesel aus Mikroalgen dar.
Vorteile der Kultivierung von Mikroalgen sind ein verminderter Wasserbedarf und die Tatsache, dass keine landwirtschaftliche Nutzfläche benötigt wird.
