An important goal is the catalytic synthesis of organic carbonates from alcohols or epoxides and carbon dioxide because the conventional industrial production is based on reactive but toxic C1-compounds, such as phosgene (polycarbonates) or carbon monoxide (linear dialkyl carbonates).
Some CO2-based catalytic systems have already been reported.
