The alga which can be up to 40 cm in length has so many spines that its main axis is hardly visible ( see image below ) which has resulted in its descriptive German common name ‘ struppig ’ which means ‘ bristly ’ or ‘ rugged ’.

www.dbg-phykologie.deDie Struppige Armleuchteralge ( Chara horrida ) war nach 1980 in ganz Deutschland verschwunden, und wurde von Algenforschern vor wenigen Jahren in den Boddengewässern vor der Ostseeinsel Hiddensee wieder entdeckt ( oben ).
Die bis zu 40 cm hohe Pflanze ist so dicht mit Stacheln besetzt, dass der Spross kaum noch zu sehen ist ( unten ), was ihr zu ihrem Artnamen „ Struppig “ verholfen hat.
