www.madeira-web.comThe name comes from ‘ Fajã ’ – Portuguese for a landfall at the base of a cliff forming a beach-like landing and ‘ Padres ’ which are priests – meaning a land fall once belonging to priests of the Society of Jesus.
Set in a remote cove, this land produces the best Malmsey wine on the island and until 1998 it could only be accessed from the sea.
Now there is a modern glass elevator – with 350 meters one of the highest in Europe – in operation.
