www.mont-terri.chThe rock laboratory is situated in the Opalinus Clay, a mainly marly claystone with differing proportions of sand and carbonates.
The Opalinus Clay is around 180 million years old (Aalenian).
The name Opalinus Clay is derived from a particular ammonite, the Leioceras opalinum, whose shell consists of aragonite and, when backlit, shimmers with a bluish “opalescent” glow.
