Ammoniten sind mit den Muscheln und Schnecken den Weichtieren (Mollusken) zuzuordnen.
Sie sind Verwandte urzeitlicher Tintenfische, die zwischen 300 Millionen und 70 Millionen Jahre vor heute die Meere bevölkerten.

www.geosammlung.uni-bremen.deDiese neue und wissenschaftlich völlig unbearbeitete Fundstelle haben Prof. Stinnesbeck und Prof. Frey sowie Wissenschaftler in Chile in den vergangenen Jahren untersucht.
In drei Expeditionen lokalisierte das deutsch-chilenische Expertenteam auf diesem Ichthyosaurier-Friedhof mehr als 40 nahezu vollständige Skelette von ausgewachsenen Tieren, Jungtieren und sogar Embryos, gemeinsam mit Ammoniten, Belemniten, Muscheln, Knochenfischen und Pflanzenresten.
„Diese Anreicherung ist einzigartig für Chile und Südamerika und macht auch die weltweite Bedeutung dieser Fossilienfundstelle aus“, sagt der Wissenschaftler vom Institut für Geowissenschaften der Universität Heidelberg.

In three expeditions the German-Chilean team of experts uncovered more than 40 virtually complete skeletons of adult and juvenile ichthyosaurs, and even embryos, as well as ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, bony fishes and plant remains.
“This concentration is unique for Chile and South America, making the fossil site significant internationally,” explains the researcher from Heidelberg University's Institute of Earth Sciences.
