Zur endgültigen Klärung wollte sich Papst Gregor nach Deutschland begeben, aber bei der unerwarteten und bedrohenden Ankunft des Kaisers fand er in Mathildes Burg von Canossa einen günstigeren Zufluchtsort.
Hier, nach einer langen Verhandlung am 26. Januar 1077, bekam der unter die Burgmauer in Büßerhemd gekommene Kaiser die päpstliche Verzeihung.

In this same castle, after a long and difficult negotiation, the 26 January of 1077, the Emperor, obtained, as a pilgrim, the Pope's forgiveness, under the Pope's walls.
