corporate.corbis.comEine mögliche Instabilität eines geraden Filaments ist mit einer negativen Linienspannung des Rotationszentrum verbunden und führt zunächst zu helikalen Filamenten ( vgl. Abbildung 1 ) und später zu irregulärer chaotischer Dynamik.
Der Übergang von geraden zu helikalen Filamenten (interaktives Applet) wird im Detail mit Hilfe von Simulationen des Reaktions-Diffusions-Modells von D. Barkley reproduziert und zeigt neben der negativen Linienspannung auch einen Übergang zwischen einem geraden und einem zig-zag-förmigen Filament (vgl. Abbildung 2), der als dreidimensionales Mäandern bekannt ist.

Simulation show besides negative line tension an additional transition between a straight filament and a zig-zag shaped filament (cf.Figure 2), that is known as three-dimensional meandering.
