Seine musikalische Laufbahn begann der 1942 in Mainz geborene Komponist Volker David Kirchner als Bratscher.
Parallel zu seinem Wirken als Orchestermusiker gründete er 1970 in Wiesbaden das Ensemble 70 und arbeitete ab 1972 als Komponist für Bühnenmusik am Hessischen Staatstheater Wiesbaden.

In parallel to his work as an orchestral musician, he founded the Ensemble 70 in Wiesbaden in 1970, and since 1972 has worked as a composer for stage music at the Hesse State Theatre in Wiesbaden.
