Seit Inkrafttreten des Chemiewaffenübereinkommens im Jahr 1997 förderte das Programm Abrüstung die Vernichtung von Chemiewaffen durch Vermittlungs- und Informationsarbeit, wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen in Regionen, wo Chemiewaffenarsenale gelagert sind sowie durch soziale Projekte zugunsten betroffener Menschen.
Von den total 72’531 Tonnen Chemiewaffen in Arsenalen wurden bis Ende 2013 58’528 Tonnen Chemiewaffen vernichtet.
