Auf dem europäischen Gipfel in Madrid am 15. und 16. Dezember 1995 wurde deren Beginn auf den 1. Januar 1999 ( unwiderrufliche Festlegung des Euro-Umrechnungskurses der Teilnehmerwährungen ) und auf Ende 2002 ( Einführung des Euro-Bargelds ) gelegt.
Die Vorbereitung der Euro-Einführung wurde in Belgien vom Generalkommissariat für den Euro koordiniert, der am 22. November 1996 gegründet und am 30. April 2002 aufgelöst wurde.

In Belgium, the preparations for the introduction of the euro were coordinated by the General Commission for the Euro, set up on 22 November 1996 and dissolved on 30 April 2002.
