Das hohe Fischvorkommen in den ausgedehnten Fischgründen spielte eine wesentliche Rolle bei der Besiedlung Finnlands und ermöglichte den Menschen, in dem rauen Klima nach der Eiszeit zu überleben.
Fisch ist noch heute ein wichtiger Teil der finnischen Ernährung.
