Die doppelbrechenden Eigenschaften der vernetzten Flüssigkristalle erzeugen so Verzögerungsschichten, deren optische Verzögerung durch die Dicke der Schicht einstellbar ist.
Eine optische Verzögerung von λ/4 konvertiert z.B. linear polarisiertes Licht in zirkular polarisiertes Licht und umgekehrt.
