Bilder und Messungen vom Meeresbodens zeigten zum erst Mal, dass die Tiefsee der zentralen Arktis keine öde Wüste ist, sondern oft enorme Ansammlungen von Seegurken, Schwämmen, Haarsterne und Seeanemonen auftreten, die sich von Meereisalgen ernähren.
Die warmen Temperaturen, der Eisrückgang und die erhöhte Lichtverfügbarkeit unter dem Eis verschiebt dabei auch die Saisonalität der zentralen Arktis.
