Da zunehmend internationale Forschungsgruppen ihre Ergebnisse in der Zeitschrift veröffentlichen, hat sich der interdisziplinäre Charakter in erfreulicher Weise international ausgeweitet.
Aufgrund dieser wachsenden Internationalisierung der Zeitschrift haben sich Herausgeber und Verlag entschlossen, diesem Umstand Rechnung zu tragen und den Namen der Zeitschrift einem internationalen Leserpublikum zugänglich zu machen.
Ab 2013 erscheint die Zeitschrift nun unter dem Namen "GMS Hygiene and Infection Control".
