Petrus ), an ihrem Sitz ( Begegnung zwischen Leo dem Großen und Attila ) und in ihrem Besitz ( Verjagung des Heliodor aus dem Tempel ) gefährdet wird.
Diese Episoden wurden ausgewählt, um das politische Programm Julius ’ II. ( 1503-1513 ) zum Ausdruck zu bringen, das die Befreiung Italiens von der damaligen französischen Besatzung zum Ziel hatte, um so dem Papsttum die bedrohte zeitliche Macht zurückzugeben.
Die vier Episoden aus dem Alten Testament im Gewölbe stammen von Raffael.
