2008 übernahm er zudem die Leitung einer Forschungsgruppe der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft an der Universität Hamburg.
Dort ist er seit 2013 Direktor des neuen Max-Plank-Institutes in Hamburg.
Zudem ist Prof. Cavalleri Mitglied im Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging (CUI).
