Innerhalb der Geographie knüpft es an die Transformationsforschung an, die sich mit den gesellschaftlichen und sozialräumlichen Veränderungen in ehemals sozialistischen Staaten nach 1989 beschäftigt.
Durch die Fokussierung auf die innerstaatliche Aushandlung von Macht und die Analyse religiöser Netzwerke leistet es zugleich einen Beitrag zur Politischen Geographie sowie zur Religionsgeographie.
Als Fallbeispiele sollen vorzugsweise die beiden ehemaligen Sowjetrepubliken Tadschikistan und Usbekistan dienen.
