Um diese Fragen zu klären, liegt unser Fokus derzeit auf den Mollusken, einer stark heterogenen Gruppe von Lophotrochozoen, deren Erfolg zum Teil auf ein unglaublich vielfältiges Angebot an Schalen-Morphologien zurückzuführen ist.
Durch die Kombination von molekularbiologischen Untersuchungen an Tieren, wie der Süßwasserschnecke Lymnaea stagnalis, dem tropischen Seeohr ( Abalone ) Haliotis asinina und der Südsee-Perlmuschel Pinctada maxima mit der Fülle von bioinformatischen Genomdaten der Metazoen, können wir damit beginnen, die molekularen Ereignisse aufzudecken, die diese Schalenvielfalt erzeugt haben.
Vorteilhaft an der Studie der Mollusca ist der Umstand, dass diese Gruppe eine der morphologisch diversesten der Tierwelt ist, repräsentiert durch die bisher wenig untersuchten Lophotrochozoa.

By combining wet-lab studies on animals such as the freshwater pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis, the tropical abalone Haliotis asinina and the South Sea pearl oyster Pinctada maxima with the bioinformatic wealth of metazoan genomic data, we can begin to dissect the molecular events that generated this shelled diversity.
An advantage to studying the Mollusca is that this group is one of the most morphologically diverse of the animal kingdom, and is a representative of the much understudied Lophotrochozoa.
