Mit allgemein sprachwissenschaftlichen Methoden untersucht sie einerseits die Struktur ( Grammatik ) und den Wortschatz ( Lexik ) einzelner Sprachen, andererseits vergleicht sie verschiedene afrikanische Sprachen, um Aufschluss über Verwandtschafts-verhältnisse oder Lehnbeziehungen zu erhalten ( vergleichende Sprachforschung, Sprachkontaktforschung ).
Sprache ist immer auch Ausdruck der Kultur, so dass ihre Sprecher und deren Umfeld ebenfalls wichtige Themenbereiche in der Afrikanistik sind (Soziolinguistik).
