Denn damit verweist Bruckner selbst auf eine mehr oder weniger subtile Tragikomik, wie sie die Romantik von Franz Schubert oder Robert Schumann über Hector Berlioz bis hin zu Gustav Mahler prägt – und die Wagner in dieser Form fremd ist.
Im langsamen Satz seiner 4. Sinfonie wird Bruckner noch einen Schritt weitergehen:
