Obwohl die ökologischen und sozialen Probleme in den teils bis zu 100 Jahre alten Minen von Behörden, NGOs und dem Konzern selbst dokumentiert sind und sich AngloGold Ashanti 2004 zur Verbesserung der Situation verpflichtet hat, hat sich die Situation seither noch verschlimmert.
Kein Wunder erhielt AngloGold Ashanti von der ghanaischen Umweltbehörde in einem Branchenvergleich kürzlich die schlechteste mögliche Bewertung was Soziales und Umweltschutz anbelangt.
