Während die Morbidität stark schwanken kann (5-45 %) ist die Mortalität jedoch niedrig (< 10 %) .

Schmerzen ( manchmal wellenförmig, aber auch dauerhaft ) im linken Unterbauch, aufgeblähter Bauch, Verstopfung, Fieber etc., erhöhte weiße Blutkörperchen ( Leukozyten ) und CRP ( ein wichtiger Entzündungsparameter im Blut ).
Die Diagnose wird über die klinische Untersuchung, die Sonographie und vor allem über die Computer Tomographie ( CT ) mit Kontrastmittelgabe über den Anus gestellt.
