Hokkaidō ist die zweitgrößte Insel Japans und wurde bis 1868 Ezo bzw. Yezo genannt.
Getrennt wird die Heimat der Urbevölkerung Nordjapans, der Ainu, von der Hauptinsel Honshū durch die Tsugaru Meerenge, allerdings sind beide Inseln durch den Seikan Unterwassertunnel miteinander verbunden.
Mit seinen kalten, schneereichen Wintern ist die Insel Nordjapans ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel für Winterfreunde, das kleine Örtchen Niseko beispielsweise lockt jedes Jahr zahlreiche Ski- und Snowboardfahrer an.
