Der im antiken Perserreich verbreiteten Religion des Zoroastrismus zufolge war es der Prophet Zarathustra, der seinen Anhängern beibrachte, aus wilden Gräsern Getreide zu züchten und der damit den Ackerbau und die sesshafte Lebensweise begründete.
Der Ackerbau entwickelte sich tatsächlich zuerst im Nahen Osten, im so genannten fruchtbaren Halbmond, allerdings schon Jahrtausende vor dem Erscheinen Zarathustras.
