Es kam dabei eine neue, an der ETH Zürich entwickelte Software zum Einsatz, wie Tim Geppert, ETH-Doktorand und Erstautor der Studie erklärt.
Diese Software errechnet für zwei gegebene Moleküle – in diesem Fall den Botenstoff und seinen Rezeptor – aus, wo und wie sie am ehesten aneinanderbinden und wechselwirken.
Zudem sagt die Software voraus, wo genau an dieser Bindungsstelle ein kleines Wirkstoffmolekül binden und die Wechselwirkung von Botenstoff und Rezeptor somit blockieren kann.

For two given molecules – in this case the messenger substance and its receptor – the software calculates where and how they are most likely to bind to one another and to interact.
The software also predicted a binding site for druglike compounds, which might block the interaction between the messenger and its receptor.
