Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hartmut Michel ist seit 1987 Direktor des Max-Planck-Instituts für Biophysik.
Er leitet die Abteilung für Molekulare Membranbiologie und ist außerdem außerplanmäßiger Professor an der Universität Frankfurt am Main .
Professor Michel erhielt 1988, zusammen mit Johann Deisenhofer und Robert Huber, den Nobelpreis für Chemie für seinen wichtigen Beitrag zum Verständnis der Photosynthese.
