2007 wurde das African Union Border Programme ( AUBP ) ins Leben gerufen, um diesen Risiken entgegenzuwirken.
Das Programm umfasst Festlegung (Delimitation) und Markierung (Demarkation) von Grenzen, grenzüberschreitende Zusammenarbeit, Aufbau von Institutionen, Capacity Development, Mobilisierung von Ressourcen.
Im Auftrag des Auswärtigen Amtes (AA) fördert das GIZ Vorhaben „Unterstützung des Grenzprogramms der AU“ die Umsetzung des Grenzprogramms auf kontinentaler, regionaler, nationaler und lokaler Ebene.

The programme’s core components comprise border delimitation and demarcation, cross-border cooperation, institution building and capacity development, and resource mobilisation.
On behalf of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA), the GIZ project Support for the AUBP is promoting the programme’s implementation at continental, regional, national and local levels.

Zum Projektende wird der endgültige Entwicklungsstand des Interpretationsschlüssels und der zugehörigen Kartieranleitung ( " guidelines for delimitation and interpretation " ) dokumentiert und in die nachfolgenden Arbeitspakete integriert.
