Ab dem 4. Jh. v. Chr. wie auch das ganze hellenistische Zeitalter hindurch ist insbesondere im Innern Nordetruriens der Einäscherungsritus belegt, mit dem sich daraus ergebenden Bestattungsbrauch, die Asche der Verstorbenen in aus Stein gehauenen oder aus Terrakotta modellierten Urnen aufzubewahren.
In den bedeutenderen etruskischen Städten dieses weiträumigen Gebiets ( Volterra, Chiusi und Perugia ) produzierte man eine große Quantität solcher Aschenurnen mit besonderen künstlerischen Eigenschaften und Typologien.
Die Reliefs an den Frontseiten der Sarkophage entstanden aus einer selbständigen Entwicklung des gestalterischen Repertoirs des Hellenismus.

Die Typologie der Objekte ist heterogen und umfasst einen Zeitraum, der von antiken Objekten aus der Villanova-Zeit bis zur typischen Keramikproduktion hellenistischer Zeit reicht.
