1969 jedoch kam Nelly Kaplan erst richtig in Schwung, als ihr mit ihrem ersten Spielfilm La fiancée du pirate (A Very Curious Girl, USA, deutscher Titel:
Die Piratenbraut), ein provokanter und sarkastischer Film mit Bernadette Lafonte in der Hauptrolle (Truffauts Une belle fille comme moi, Eustaches La Maman et la putain), der internationale Durchbruch gelang.
